New Forum Layout

Postby Pops on Thu Sep 17, 2009 7:26 pm

I realize that the changes our host has made to our forum may make browsing a little difficult for you for a little while. I'd love to tell you that I'll just change it back, but we can't do that. . . we've known for several months now that our host planned to upgrade the forums and I've been warning that it could happen at any time. Well, it finally happened. If you're having a hard time navigating the site or if you aren't sure of how something works or, just as likely, why something DOESN'T work, just let me know.

Please PM me with any questions you may have about the new layout so I can add it to this list.

Reporting PGS Violations

Postby Pops on Thu Sep 17, 2009 8:58 pm

Alright, as I'm finding new features I'm trying to make a point to make a post about it in here so you all can try it out...

If you look on the top right hand side of any post, there is an upside down triangle with a red exclamation mark inside it. If you click on that post, it will report the post so a moderator will review it for content. Basically, if something seems inappropriate or particularly offensive, or if you think it's a violation of the Popsonian Guidelines, click the report button and we'll do what we can to fix it :)

Increasing Forum Font Sizes

If you want to make the font size larger ON THE POSTS, go to the top RIGHT side of the screen. There's an A with a chevron on each side; click that and the font will get larger.

Using HTML

Postby Pops on Thu Sep 17, 2009 9:12 pm

HTML CODE IS NOT ALLOWED IN PHPBB 3.0 If you want to post images, you must post it using BBCode which looks like this:

Code: Select all
[img]http://SomeAddress.com/ImageName.jpg[/img]

For most things the code is the same as HTML, you just use these guys -> [ ] instead of these -> < >

Youtube and Tangle Videos

Postby Pops on Thu Sep 17, 2009 10:36 pm

Youtube: When you click on "PostReply," you can then click on the "Youtube" button at the end of the code buttons. Put the URL of the video between the [Youtube] tags and you're good to go! Here's an example of what it would look like in the reply box if you wanted to post a Youtube video:

Code: Select all
[Youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhApYxZisBI&feature=related[/Youtube]

Which gives you:

You can now post Tangle videos the same way you do with Youtube videos, just make sure you click the "Tangle" button. Here's an example of what it would look like in the reply box if you wanted to post a Tangle video:

Code: Select all
[Tangle]http://www.tangle.com/view_video?viewkey=84138e76e13c5c50e12c[/Tangle]

Which gives you:

If you would like to be able to post from another source, PM me with a link to the site and I'll try to set it up.

Using BBCode

Postby Pops on Fri Sep 18, 2009 11:52 am

We have a pretty good selection of BBCode tags in use, but if you find you need some that are NOT included in the list below, PM me and we'll try to get those implemented. In the list below, we first show how to write the code (which may also be featured as an editing button in the Reply Box), then an example of what that code does.

Centering
Code: Select all
[center]Your Message Goes Here[/center]

Your Message Goes Here

Right Align
Code: Select all
[right]Your Message Goes Here[/right]

Your Message Goes Here

Font Type
Code: Select all
[font=Times New Roman] Your Message Goes Here[/font]

Your Message Goes Here

Horizontal Line
Code: Select all
[hr][/hr]

Strikethrough
Code: Select all
[s]Your Message Goes Here[/s]

Your Message Goes Here

New Profile Features

Postby Pops on Fri Sep 18, 2009 4:19 pm

With this new PHPBB 3.0 platform, we've picked up a lot of features that we didn't have before. Among the most interesting changes to the forum for our registered members can be found inside the member profiles. Now, I don't mean the changes that happened inside the User Control Panel (link on the top left of the screen, below Portal and Board index). A lot of work went into that panel, but those changes are mostly aesthetic and they don't introduce a tremendously surprising amount of functionality. The interesting stuff is inside your user profile which is viewable by clicking your name in a post or by clicking the Members link on the top right side of the screen (beside the logout button), then finding your name (or someone else's).

You should immediately notice that this profile looks nothing like the ones with which we are familiar from the previous forum. The first thing that stands out is the Recent Activity Feed. This area contains updated information about your most recent posts. This is particularly useful if you don't remember where you posted something or if you want to follow a friend's posts. . .it's all conveniently located inside the profile.

Next, you'll notice below the activity feed that there is not a Shout It area. This essentially acts as a personal blog for each of our members. If you've got thoughts about something, you can post little bits there. Now, these posts are not made as announcements to the rest of the community so if it's something important or an actual question, you'll want to go ahead and make a thread for it somewhere in the forum. This is very similar to the comment function you see on Facebook, but it's limited to the profile area.

You will also see looking around that profile that you can add friends and "foes." Adding friends shows up in your profile and on the Portal page so you can easily find where your friends are if they're online, whether they're online, what posts they've made recently, etc. Adding someone to your Foes list does nothing but block them. Essentially, if someone is constantly saying things that offend you, instead of being offended, just add them to your Foes list and they will be ignored until you remove them from the list.
